Workout: IT STARTS IN YOUR MIND

Have you ever started humming a tune or singing a song and thought, “Why is this song on my mind?”

I do it all the time. Recently it was an 80’s “one hit wonder”. Out of the blue I was singing, “Oh, Mickey you’re so fine. You’re so fine, you blow my mind. Hey Mickey!” Just in case you don’t remember this song (I bet you do though!):

I determined that I had heard the song playing in the grocery store earlier—several hours earlier. It was just background music.  I don’t even remember thinking about. Our minds are incredible like that, aren’t they?

Research shows that we average 50,000-70,000 thoughts per day!* The brain is known as the control center for the body. Having said that, wouldn’t you agree,

What we think about is extremely important?

2 Peter 2:19 NLT  “. . .For you are a slave to whatever controls you. . .”

When I was in the grocery store, I was thinking about my grocery list, the coupons that I had, and comparing prices etc. I didn’t even realize that I was also thinking, “Hey Mickey!”

What we think about influences our actions.

Advertisers are banking on it—literally! A lot is going on in our minds subconsciously, and consciously. Think about (no pun intended) those TV jingles that get stuck in your head. I’ll name a popular one for you: “The Best Part of Waking Up, Is Folgers in Your Cup.”  I bet you can think of a few right now!

“Watch your thoughts for they become words.
Watch your words for they become actions.
Watch your actions for they become habits.
Watch your habits for they become your character.
And watch your character for it becomes your destiny.” ~Margaret Thatcher

In my last two blogs I have written about “getting personal with God.” You see, God knows ALL of those 50,000-70,000 thoughts, even the ones we cannot recollect. Research has shown that 95% of those thoughts are the same as the day before . .. and the day before that. And 80% of those repeated thoughts are NEGATIVE!**

That’s kind of scary isn’t it? This is why God wants us to be open and personal with Him. Let Him in our thoughts (Psalm 139:23-24). He wants us to stay connected to Him in our minds and hearts regularly because He can help us change those negative thoughts.

Romans 12:2 NLT “. . .but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” (emphasis added)

We all have thoughts playing in our minds like background music, so to speak. What is your background music saying?

According to the research that I mentioned above, chances are that many are negative.

God wants to change that! Starting now!
